Below is a letter that I have addressed to the Editor of The Commercial News, it has already been addressed and put in the mailbox for delivery and I hope that it will make it into the paper but just in case it doesn't....well here it is.
Letter to the Editor:
At the second meeting of this group, held on Saturday, November 1, 2003 at 6:00 p.m., it was discussed and adopted that the group formerly known as Committee for Community Peace, CCP amend their title to the more appropriate title of Committee of Peace, COP.
On behalf of COP we would like to extend our gratitude to City Manager, Joe Bippus for his attendance at the meeting and his support and efforts in assisting COP with our organization.
On a personal note I would like to say that Mr. Bippus’ attendance at the meeting has left me with great hopes that our expectations to work with law enforcement, city officials and the residents of Three Rivers is achievable. I was honored to have Mr. Bippus attend and see that he is willing to give his own time to learn more about the concerns of the Second District residents of Three Rivers and work with us to attain our mutual goal of a Community of Peace.
I can say that after this one meeting I am looking forward to working with Mr. Bippus. I believe that he is a fair man with a good heart and an open mind. I believe that he will work with COP to help us continue to make Three Rivers a thriving city. I believe that we all have the same goal of bettering our own backyard. After all, we can only change the world if we change our corner of it, and we need to start here. I believe that my house, my neighborhood and my city are worth fighting for and proving that we are a community of pride, trust and respect.
I was a little disappointed that I did not see any new faces other than Mr. Bippus’ at the meeting, but I am left with high hopes after this meeting that COP will soon be reaching all the residents of Three Rivers. I was however happy to see that almost all those who attended the first meeting were at the second meeting as well. I am impressed with candidate Buck Hicks, who for two weeks now has given up time with his family to learn more about the concerns and goals of COP and to attend these meetings. It is refreshing to see a candidate who is not only concerned with the “big” issues but the concerns of residents as well. His attendance, input and assistance with COP has not gone unnoticed or unappreciated. I would like to say that Mr. Hicks has already exhibited a sense of commitment to the City of Three Rivers that is almost above and beyond, but just proves he would be a great asset to the board of City Commissioners.
A special thank you also goes out to Commissioner Gretta Schermerhorn for her assistance in beginning, setting up and contacting all those we needed to establish COP. As a resident of Second District Mrs. Schermerhorn is well aware of the issues we face here and has been a very important asset to COP. Her attendance at the COP meetings and her continued support as a resident and Commissioner have earned her my respect.
On a personal note I am happy to say that my pride in the City of Three Rivers has been restored and my hopes of peace throughout the community has reached an all time high.
COPs primary goal is to work with law enforcement, city officials and the residents of Three Rivers to promote a Community of Peace not a neighborhood of terrorism.
