I haven't heard of this. Is there a request for rezoning at the city? If this is someone looking to open a store front ministry then, as much as I hate to say it, I agree with Tom. We need retail in the downtown area and this just doesn't mesh.

It was in the Commercial 3 / 4 weeks ago. They already have a store front where they do bible study and maybe prayers. They want to either get a larger store front or use the one they have for church services. I do not remember if there was anything about rezoning. If there is already one church in the area I do not see how they can refuse another. There was also something about it in the e-mail the city sends out for the next commission meeting. I deleted mine so I can not reference it.

VXV ministries, or "Verse By Verse", is simply an expositional Bible Study, where they teach the Bible line by line. They take a book and go through it chapter by chapter, verse by verse. Thus the name. I go there every week and it's awesome; nothing like a typical church, not that I have anything against a typical church. These are good people, they're neither weird nor goofy. And they have a pretty young demograph, which I believe personally will benefit the struggling downtown retail. Seriously, there are several vacancies down there, and for the ten years Ive lived here the occupancy rate has been fairly pathetic. Lots of grungy looking open store fronts. The businesses would be super wise to get on board with these people, they will only help local businesses.

Welcome to the forum Sting777. I am glad you explained the name because I was racking my brain trying to figure out what it meant. Personally I agree with the sentiment that any foot traffic downtown is better then no foot traffic for our local businesses.

cball I don't think vacancy is the problem with getting retail downtown.

Buck - never said anything about vacancies in the downtown area. Just opposed to this use. There are plenty of areas outside the downtown area that are zoned and appropriate for this purpose. As I said, this use just does not enhance the downtown businesses and prospects for new businesses.

How can they refuse VxV Ministries when there is a church downtown already? Or is it because it is Elberts church? It would bring more people downtown not just the BAR people. There should be more then enough parking. We have a Million Dollar parking lot. Sounds like Tom and the DDA just want to keep these people out. Still want to know what they have against religion and Christ.

The Three Rivers Planning Commission is slated to conduct public hearings Monday evening (November 12) on two special use permit applications. - Its on the Agenda tonight.
