Saw the brief note on RCJ about the County Treasurer resigning effective in January. Anyone know what is going on with that? I heard rumor that she was embezzling but doesn't make sense that she would still be there if that was the case.

Per Saturday's Commercial, it's due to illness.

Funny that you were fast to suspect embezzlement. [:(!] I see that the out-going Treasurer is making $59,000. Anyone know what the appointed person will make? Does Judy West-Wing get to pick the salary? Do the Comissioners get a voice?

He was not fast to suspect embezzlement. He was trying to clarify a rumor. Quite a difference. He also said the rumor did not make sense , so maybe clarifying a rumor was a good thing to do rather than letting it continue.

I also did not see anyone jumping on the embezzlement band wagon.

I was not making a judgement or rumor mongering but just curious due to the brevity of the press release and lack of information in the original story (before Bruce updated it). As I said, embezzlement didn't make sense but what led me in that direction was the choice of words. When I see the word "resigned" rather than "retired" it does raise some red flags based on the past year or so. My best wishes go out to Phyllis and hope she is doing well.

I apologize for my vocabulary in my earlier post. I would agree with you that the wording of the "press release" was unfortunate. They really should have had their ducks in a row before sending anything to the media. 1) That she is resigning. 2) Why she is resigning. 3) Is there anyone in-house that is interested. 4) Information for individuals interested in applying (salary, hours, responsabilities, training, dates for resumes) I see they have been adding to the original information- but I guess I would like to know my salary before I would jump in. $25,000 a year or $75,000 a year. How do they determine or set that salary!?!?!

If they are like most businesses they have a pay scale range for the position that they will offer based on experience, training, etc.

Apparantly, the county does NOT run like most businesses. The way that St. Joseph County has treated Barry Miller is atrocious. What a sad day in our county.

Buck poses a great question. What DID go wrong and how do we avoid the situation in the future. Some might think that the county administrator was simply trying to save the county $3,000. Others see something far more sinister. Waiting for the press release and resignation from Barry Miller's current employer to hit the official channels and then changing the offer assuming he was "in too deep" to back out. Is this a case of the county comissioners coming in at the 11th hour and messing things up or was Judy West Wing attempting to pull a snow-job on the comissioners by asking her County Treasurer to "not say anything to anyone...even your husband"? Hmmm. What DID go wrong and how do we ensure it does not happen in the future? If we cannot figure THAT out we are going to have crummy applicants from now on.

I would say that west-wing should be fired right away, what she did is just corupt,we do not run a secret society or we should not be runing one in the county. The commmisioners that met have together just put themselves in the toliet as far as being honest. The citizens just went through one of there give away programs(or tried),awayone who thinks jobs are going to be created here is just not thinking about all the SPENDING IN WASHINGTON without producing jobs.If you don't believe this just look at the annoucement yesterday that Sears and K Mart are going to close 100 stores because of a poor holiday sales.

BC---The "spending in Washington" was done to protect the country from another Depression. That's not a subject of conversation that anyone who believes 'trickle-down' is anything other than 'tinkle on'. Save your arguments for the election coming up.

Sears and K Mart (the same company now) is a victim of their own poor marketing. There is no Democrat hiding in the bushes wanting to put Grandma on a list for a death panel. We all remember that one.

do you really think we are not going into a depression right now with a 15 trillion in debt and we are only able to pay the interest? Both parties are to blame, instead of keep borrowing from the Chinese we should have been cutting programs all across the board. I am sorry to have to say that because I no its going to be hard on every one, but that is the only way to solve our countrys problems.Spending more is just not working.
