The Three Rivers and Colon school districts have been placed on the Michigan Education Associations critical list because of the lack of new teacher contracts.

According to the MEA, units are put on its critical list when efforts to reach a contract stall or when bargaining has been protracted and unproductive and school district employees feel they need assistance from the community and MEA to reach a fair and equitable contract settlement. I know that they have been in talks for sometime and I believe the Board of Education is trying to do the best they can for the teachers. The money just isn't there it's only going to get worse for TRCS and other districts. Enrollment is down, State funding is down, and insurance and the cost of other benefits is up. Something has to give somewhere and they've already made many, many cuts to the programs for the kids. The district is currently studying the feasibility of putting all schools (elementary and secondary) on the same schedule and have only one bus run in the morning and afternoon. They believe they will be able to reduce driver staff and save on fuel. They've made cuts to some sporting events and are looking at possibly reducing field trips and other activities such as that. Again something has to give.

Too bad they didn't save for a rainy day a decade or so ago eh? I remember the teachers receiving rather decent pay increases when my pay increase was minimal or even frozen. The teachers have not really felt the ecomonic crunch until now have they? Reality hurts huh?
