I assume that means yes, which is what I had thought. And obviously I asked the question because of the open carry there. I guess it surprises me that police officers can (or do) open carry out of uniform.

And yes I know Michigan doesn't have a law against open carry. It still surprises just based on what I have been told by other officers.

What do you mean Trading Tales? I would, personally, love to open carry and think that I should be able to because 1) There is no law against it in Michigan and 2) I have a permit to conceal carry already.

Buck, I was also surprised by the picture. I guess I don't personally see a lot of officers off duty with a gun in plain sight like that, especially around little kids.

lilly1031, yea it just seems weird in today's climate (fear of guns in general) that this picture was taken and published especially with the kid in the picture and at a safety event.

Don't get me wrong. I don't have any issues with it. In fact I think Gun Safety should be taught universally to anyone who may come in contact with a gun. I just found the picture peculiar for the reasons you mentioned and more.

And I am a little jealous that I can't open carry at the Walgreens myself. [;)]

I want to thank Walgreen's, the Deputies, firemen and all the people that donated for this event. What a great way to help our community and Hope the Balk supporters don't ruin it for the rest of us. Tip of the hat to you

Naw I wouldn't make a good cop. I would have a serious problem with enforcing laws that I don't agree with.

I think, based on your last post, that I may have just figured out what your issue is. I think you think I knew who the person pictured is and that I posted it to make some point. I don't know how many times I have to tell you I do not pull punches on this site. I am very open and honest about my thoughts and opinions and try to always be up front about my intentions so that there aren't these kinds of misunderstandings.

I have to tell you I am a little uncertain of what do with the picture / post now because if it is who I think it may be I don't want more people to get the wrong idea. I am not sure what you meant by the Balk supporters ruining it for the rest of us but I can tell you this. If I would have seen this person at the event carrying like this I MOST DEFINATELY would have struck up a conversation with them regardless of who they may be. I love firearms and enjoy any chance to talk to others about 'em.

You are right, that is a police officer, a St. Joseph County Sheriff's department officer who is supposed to be UNDERCOVER. Yes, that is Curtis Allen in the picture. I could really care less that he's been getting his photo props but is that really smart being that you are supposed to be UNDERCOVER. I am not in law enforcement but common sense would tell me that that is a great way to blow your cover and get yourself and your partners in a dangerous situation. I was personally in attendance and appreciated the time that all of our public safety agencies gave for our community.

SJCC that is what I thought and I have gone back and forth about whether I should delete the post or not. I do not want to be responsible for "outing" anybody who does law enforcement work undercover.

Although I don't agree with many of the laws that police are forced to enforce I do have the utmost respect for the vast majority of officers and appreciate the work that they do and the danger they face every day on the job.

I hope to meet him in person someday to discuss this. Until then I am going to remove the picture and link from the site.

Let the conspiracy theories begin. I don't know about you all but I can't wait to hear the reasons that I am doing this from people who have no clue about the type of person I am.

Yah you need to delete it, it appears you have already deleted something. I think it is pretty sad when our community starts advertising who the under-covers are. I do believe that the partner was there also just maybe not in the shot. My beef is that you don't need to be pointing out who is undercover. Buck, for not being to interested it seems these days you have an awful lot to say about who is running but your pretty sly about it.

Had he gone to the event and fingerprinted children, minus the gun, no one would have wondered who he was. IMHO he advertised himself.
