Are the Commissioners really doing their job?

So basically on Feb.16 when the commission discussed what would determine the process to fill the vacancy that was just talk? Seriously, I go to those meetings to be informed. I agreed with the decision to use the questionare because it seemed fair enough. I even understand the commissions take on appointing an appointee that would not be running for election. And if it would have been discussed at the Feb. 16 meeting as part of the appointment process I wouldn't have blinked an eye. However, Mrs. Cox did announce her intention that night prior to the commissions discussion on what the process would be. (The result of this discussion was an established criteria the commissioners would use to appoint I thought.) At no time was it mentioned that an appointee would not be eligible if running for office. So I guess what we would need written is a set of eligibility requirements as well as a criteria for appointing a vacancy. Dare to Care? Cindy King

If only one of the potential appointees intends to run I would then tend to instead give that one person preference. 2. If all of the potential appointees intend to run, one of them must still be chosen. 3. And last, suppose only one of three potential appointees does not intend to run but this hypothetical individual were incompetent, unscrupulous, or worse. Such a protocol could force an appointment of one who may be very detrimental to the city. Except, this was a personal preference issue to base the appointment on intent to or lack there of. We need to make sure that personal preference doesn't happen again like this. Basically like any doctrine protecting the rights of its people all are created equally. The current commission created this unfair advantage. Bottom line it shouldn't have mattered whether or not the selectee intended to run. Mrs. Cox and Mr. Homan should not have been removed based on their intent to run. Writing a protocol to coinside with the personal preference of the commission is not what needs to be written however a protocol of eligibility requirements on filling a vacancy could protect us as citizens from this reoccuring. FEB. 16, 2004 the commission set the process for determining a appointee for 2nd district...Exactly when was the personal preference of the commission discussed? Behind closed doors somewhere???? Citizens of Peace Meeting Tonight

As I said before I too agree that this is a disgrace. Initially COP went to the commission to address the issues of 2nd district. COP being a group of 2nd district citizens coming together to make 2nd district a safe and thriving district. I believe it was Commissioner Webb who seemed offended that we intended COP to be a sole entity of 2nd district and requested we make it a city wide group. We complied...willingly. Now here we are..the orignal members of COP. Currently and from the beginning we have only had one member that is from an outside district. BUCK HICKS has been the only citizen outside of 2nd district to consistantly come forth. (HAVE WE SAID THANK-YOU LATELY!!!!) Perhaps we should reconsider to what boundries COP really extends...We have wasted valuable time, effort and money trying to involve the whole city... Initially COP's goals were aimed at improving 2nd district by encouraging the citizens to utilize the resources available to them. Now seven months later we're standing in front the commission not doing what we set out to do but instead begging them to get involved because they asked to be involved. Waste of time! The city turned COP into a rat-race and I don't like it. We were illuded by false concern. It's really funny Commissioner Keith said referring to the TRPD "FIRE THIER BUTTS!" At this point the TRPD are the only city entity that has showed continued support. Perhaps if we ask them to spend money, like on a new neighborhood center that would be a language they'd understand. Its seems improving the quality of life is strictly a financial matter.... Dare to Care? Cindy King

Buck Says: I think the commission should have the discretion to select the person whom they believe to be the best for the position regardless of the person's race, creed, color or nationality. Above all I agree...this was my initial complaint. I'm almost positive the appointees could have had more discussion than what was discussed (gender & race). I was extremely disappointed in the commission for not being more informative about the appointees background and qualifications rather than gender & race. However, I just think that Daryl used common sence rationalization and was brave to address the issue. The fact is it does appear to be a "boys club" though. Buck Says: I believe Casey has the right idea about putting all criteria used to evaluate a potential candidate in writing. This will help insure that everything is being done fairly and consistently among all candidates. Again Buck this has been what I have been stating all along. First of all I could give a rats butt that Casey didn't get appointed. Like I said she is of more use to me as a citizen than as a commissioner especially at this point. COP needs Casey...all of Casey's attention. Don't get me wrong I support Casey 100% in her efforts. Bottom line, after leaving that meeting when they appointed Mr.Foster I was so angey I could have just spit! Not because Casey didn't win...but because of the way they manipulated the system. I mean come on...do they think we're a bunch of idiots! I am pleased that others are starting to understand that this issue shouldn't be dropped...and if it takes beating it to death than lets beat it to death...COP started because we as citizens felt that citizens needed to be more involved with the city business and work together to police how we as community could utilize and improve local law enforcement, local government and citizen involvement.
