To spank or not? Let the town vote.

These United States • Jun 4, 2004 8:47 PM

Well, I would just like someone to explain how out-lawing spanking will help this country? The people that grew up in the 50's, 60's, and even 70's have given us all this technology. Which proves that we turned out pretty good, and guess what? We were spanked and even worse. [:p] Every generation they are cracking down harder and harder on disciplining your children. Then they wonder why kids today are like they are. Maybe we should go back to spankings or even the willow tree trips. We were well behaved, at least in public. Kids today don't care about anyone but themselves and if you even mention a spanking they are screaming child abuse. As I see it, the child abuse occurs when we don't discipline our children and teach them about consqences. That could be why our jails are overflowing. Just something to think about. [:D] By the way, I tell my kids all the time that I'm going to beat them. They know that means that I'm going to scream at them until they do what I'm telling them to. LOL. They can count how many times they've gotten a spanking on one hand. As much as I think kids should get spankings, I won't be doing it because I'm not risking being put in jail for child abuse. I just think that spanking SHOULD be aloud. Dare to Care? Sheilla Stiles

Teachers: Parental involvement is lacking

These United States • Jun 3, 2004 9:53 PM

Where can I even begin? I was a room mom from the time My oldest child was in Kindergarten until about 2 years ago. ( She starts High School next fall ). I helped with R. R., grading papers, special projects, and of course the parties. I have 3 kids and some years I was running back and forth between 2 and sometimes 3 rooms during parties. Finally I got burned out and just stopped doing it. Well, I also had to go back to work full time. That's when the teacher/parent relationships started failing. If you aren't some kind of volunteer, then you aren't anyone to any teacher. That's just how it is. I don't think it should be that way at all, but that is how it is. In this day and age, it is rare that both parents aren't working. Plus, there are a lot of single parent families, They have to work. When are we, as parents, suppose to have time to volunteer? And why do you teachers not treat the parents that can't volunteer the same as you do the one's that do? In my book, that is a duoble standard. Maybe if teachers changed their attitudes about parents, they wouldn't have this complaint. Then there is the whole homework issue. My youngest gets up at 7:00am and is on the bus at 8:00am. He doesn't arrive at home from school until 4:15pm. Now, with homework, chores, supper, showers, and etc. when are they suppose to get to bed? With homework sometimes taking 2 hours or more (especially when it's working on big projects), when are we suppose to have any family time? I think teachers have a thankless job and are under paid, but until they can quit assigning so much homework and until they can start treating all parents better ( whether they volunteer or not ), they aren't going to have much parental involvement. At 9:00pm when I'm having to run back to Meijer because we just ran out of glue and this project is due in the morning, all I'm doing is cussing out the teacher that assigned this stupid project in the first place and told the kids they should get their parents to help. Maybe it should have gotten done sooner but I know my schedule is as full as anyone else's. I didn't have time to help until now, and I don't really have time to help now but it's due in the morning. You all know what I'm talking about. It just needs to end. School work is for school. Home work should just be that. Work around the house.....dishes, cleaning bedrooms, picking up toys, etc. Then, maybe we could actually have some family time together. After all, the kids are gone for hours and hours. I'd like to be able to just sit down and talk to my kids. Not discuss some math problem that neither one of us understands. Anyway, that's my view on lack of parental involvement with teachers. 12th grade: An idea whose time has gone

Buck, That article only mentioned California community colleges. Do you know if there are other colleges that have no age criteria for enrollment? Like maybe around here? [:D] Dare to Care? Sheilla Stiles

Appointment of second district commissioner

Three Rivers Area • Mar 30, 2004 7:54 PM

What's done is done....as the saying goes. I only have one problem with this whole thing. Before I got involved with going to commissioner meetings and visiting the Three Rivers site, I didn't know anything about the politics of this town. When I went to the voting booth I never knew who the commissioners were. I would vote for the name I remembered seeing there before...ie the person who had already been in there. I figured if they had been in there then they must be the best person to vote for. I know for a fact that I'm not the only one that use to do this. Sad to say but I know others who still do this. Which gives Mr. Foster free votes over ANYONE who decides to run. In my opinion, this gives Mr. Foster an unfair advantage. Maybe that's what someone had in mind by getting Mr. Foster appointed. It sounds like someone is pulling a lot of strings here! Wish I knew who and why. Dare to Care? Sheilla Stiles
