Never knew there was such a law. Your comment sent a-Googling and taught me that this conflict is not unique: Megachurches who offer a diverse array of resources w/o being liable for taxes. Churches want to expand but the surrounding land has filled w/homes. The crucial conflict here is that there is another church downtown already, and there are other community gatherings downtown, like the Masonic Lodge, et al (NOT businesses). I am not religious nor do I desire an expansion of churches. However, this country favors Rule of Law. THAT, I support. Here's a Dept of Justice link. http://www.justice.gov/crt/about/spl/documents/rluipa.php "General rule No government shall impose or implement a land use regulation in a manner that imposes a substantial burden on the religious exercise of a person, including a religious assembly or institution, unless the government demonstrates that imposition of the burden on that person, assembly, or institution-- (A) is in furtherance of a compelling governmental interest; and (B) is the least restrictive means of furthering that compelling governmental interest."

I am not a fan of yet another church where a business could go. However, that building has been sitting in its updated glory for ten years and only occupied sporadically. T.R. had a "destination restaurant": R. Stanley's. We couldn't support it, even in its small, humble location. At least this church brings people downtown and provides rent to the owner. For me, the best place to go on a peaceful Sunday morning is Lowry's. Can't get more sacred than rooms full of books w/coffee and a sunny window seat nearby :-)

That's a lot of money for a skateboard park. Other than walking through it occasionally, this seem a lot of money for a place that's not an attraction (other than the boarders, that is). Perhaps others differ in opinion?

Nope -- never took a gov't check. Glad they're available for desperate measures, though. Wonder how many people on this board have or will make use of the social programs promoted/endorsed/pushed through by the Democratic party.
