I met Dennis Allen today and...

I want you to know that Dennis Allen always was quick to respond when the College had a need. Undersheriff Allen was very professional in the way he handled issues and he followed up on any call to his office. I certainly appreciated having Undersheriff Allen in the Sheriffs Department and we always felt safer because of his quick response to any security issue we contacted him about. I have known Dennis Allen for many years as a citizen of St. Joseph County. He is a family man and a hard worker. He has worked at the job of basketball coach at a local high school for several years. Coaching doesnt pay well, but Denniss work has given him the opportunity to teach leadership with many young men in their formative years. Our present Sheriff has done a great job but he is retiring and Dennis Allen would like to put his expertise and experience to that office. I know Dennis Allen has served as the chief assistant to the sheriff. I believe Dennis Allen is the candidate that can best continue to deliver an excellent local law enforcement service at a reasonable cost. Some Deputies/Officers who worked in SCAN over the years opened a case on every piece of tip information, even if no result was generated. We have attempted to get away from that practice to keep the statistics more realistic. You asked "what happened to SCAN" here are some statistics to help you decide. In 2003 37 individuals were arrested for violations of the Michigan Public Health Code. (Dangerous Drugs) (Controlled Substances) what ever you want to call it. In 2007 145 individuals were arrested. In 2003 the SCAN Unit executed 15 search warrants on drug houses. In 2007 40 were executed. In 2003 6 meth labs were seized in 2007 15. This year to date SCAN has arrested 48, executed 21 search warrants and seized 18 meth labs. The SCAN unit in service right now is the most productive unit from its inception in 1990. I was the SCAN units lead investigator from 1990 to 1999 and have supervised it from 2003 as a Sergeant, I believe I am the person who knows. So to answer the question "What happened to SCAN" It has evolved over time to one of dedication, ingenuity and productivity too serve the Citizens of St. Joseph County. It has been recognized by many agencies in Michigan and the Federal Government for its contributions to drug enforcement. Its investigators over the years have gone on to be detectives, sergeants, police chiefs and public safety directors at many agencies. This attests to the dedication of the volunteers who have served. SCAN right now, today is the best I have ever seen its abilities. Thanks for allowing me the opportunity to answer your question.
