Death hoax in California

Although it appears it was done with the best of intentions ('to teach a lesson'), it really goes too far. Also now that the students are aware it is a hoax, their emotions are more focused on the fact it was a hoax and the emotions that go along with it (anger, betrayal, trust) instead of really learning the 'lesson' they were meant to ... don't drink and drive. I believe there are far better techniques to teach adolescents about this issue. I cannot imagine being an adult at work and the CEO designing something similar to this to 'teach the staff a lesson' on some issue, only to reveal hours later it was a hoax. It just seems a little over the top to me.

I can verify that the fee for the trip was $60.00 along with a sack lunch and money for extras. I also know the money for the trip was due quite some time ago and had until June 3rd to be eligible for a refund if the student cancelled or was unable to attend. While I do feel very badly for the students who were unable to attend the field trip due to economic reasons, I do not believe the school district is promoting segregation or exclusion ('a cover for we get to choose who we want to come and who we don't want to come'). I don't believe anyone of us would like it if 'it happened to our child', sometimes it's hard being a parent and having to watch them learn from their own actions. Again, policy is policy and should not have come as a surprise. However, I will say if the student received a 2:50 by receiving tardies .. and this was directly caused by fulfilling the requirements of the 504 plan .. I can't agree with that either. The responsibility lies with the student and the teacher in that particular case. Also, while I am sure there are individuals in our society who don't care about anyone except themselves and their world, I do not believe that is true of everyone including those who have different opinions regarding this particular situation. I still believe it is a great incentive for students to celebrate at the end of the year. However, I do not believe it is wise to use tax dollars to fund this trip quite simply because it is a want, not a need. With an already tightening budget, programs being cut and teachers working without a contract .. well, a field trip doesn't seem to be a wise expense to be funded with taxpayer money. Maybe next year they could do a fund raiser to ensure all kids who received good grades and in good standing (no disciplinary action) could attend. If it couldn't be funded completely, maybe it could alleviate some of the costs, just a thought. ____________________________________________________________________ "You can fool all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time."
