Sheriff Candidates Question and Answer Forum

I post anonymously because I have a close relative in law enforcement. Many of the Deputies are his friends, and I'd rather not put any strain on his relationship with them. However, that does not mean that my opinion is not valid, or that I am not speaking the truth just because I choose not to give my name on this forum. I still haven't decided who I will vote for. Actually, none of the choices are looking very good to me, except for maybe Mike Thyng. One reason is the attitude I have experienced from the Balk camp right here on this forum. The name calling makes you all look very childish, and it isn't helping your candidate one bit. The Allen people are no better. Here is another problem I have with Balk. Ever since I read the following line from his website, I've been thinking about two experiences I had with him. Taken from www.balkforsheriff.com : "In those years I have been to over 500 major crime scenes, including murders and other fatalities. I recall on TWO occasions being dispatched to full arrests. These were not crime scenes or suspicious deaths. They were natural deaths, and one of them was pretty much expected. (so there was no actual policing or detecting that needed to be done) On BOTH occasions at these scenes while we were attending the patient, I looked up to see Officer Balk standing there with his hands in his jacket, doing nothing! I remembered this experience with him because this was not the normal response we usually get from Police Officers. Usually, the Officers are tripping over themselves to help us in anyway possible. (I thank them very much for their service) There are so many things that need to be done when someone is in full arrest, and there are never enough hands to help. 99% of the time, an Officer will volunteer to help by taking a turn performing CPR, holding an IV bag up for us, or at least hold a flashlight on the patient so an IV can be started in a dimly lit room. Most of the time, an Officer will even help backboard and help lift a patient. Most of them get the concept of "many hands make light work". But my experience with Brad Balk on those two occasions left me with an opinion of him that I find hard to forget. Now, I admit that an Officer is not required to assist medics with their duties. But if he wasn't going to help, than IMO he should have called himself back into service and left the scene to perform the duties he gets paid to do. Not stand around with his hands in his pockets watching everyone else work. Is this the work ethic we have to look forward to if he should be elected? So, my problem with his website saying that "I have been to..fatalities" is that...yes, you may have attended fatalities, but what did you do? By the way, Mike Thyng is and has ALWAYS been johny-on-the-spot to help with anything that we need. I have never been on a scene with Dennis Allen. Yes, you are right you have a very close relative (Father) working on the department, he drives a pick up on the department. Tonight (Sunday) I saw you and your partner at Wally World it came to me who 1Patriot was. I happen to know that your family is close to USDA. I also believe he gave you a job working in the court house, as a court officer, even if it is part time. So for you to say the things that you have been saying, you need to back up and start over and start to deal with a full deck, Mr. Cody. Maybe Brad didn't help with the full arrests that you were working on, but did you ever say, "we need a hand", and I'm sure that he would have helped. I admire you for the skills that you have learned, and to know that you have helped many people in times of emergencies. But have you ever wondered how many times that Police Officers in our county have kept people alive until you or people like you get there to take over and do your job, the one that you are getting paid for. I really do not believe that you can see both sides because of your reationship with USDA. I have heard it from your Mom "about the good old boys" and I mean that I heard it from her myself, while she was working at Wally World. She was 100% for USDA and she said her family was also. And don't worry, Brad is not the type of person that will grind an axe when he is elected. To him and Mark it will be day one, lets go forward and make this a great department, to serve and protect the people of this county, and he won't worry about you supporting USDA or your Father. By the way you do have a great Dad, he is a decent person.

You're only talking one department, take a larger department, the ratio goes down, Kakamazoo, for ie. Wayne county (Detroit area). But a department as large as the state police, the ratio is also high. Do the numbers on the budget. Cost of each officer budget wise, State vs counties, you have a very high number on the state officer.

I say lets give the money to counties and hire more deputies, we don't need anymore supervisors. Trooper Thyng, question, is there not appox 1050 troops, which only appox are 650 road troops? The rest are supervisors or somewhere else in admin?? Divide that amount among all the posts, and divide them among 3 shifts, then factor in leave days, court days, vacation days, sick days, training, now many are on the road? Put in the cost of running the post, vehicles, benfits. Sorry, I have a high repect for some troops, and not so high for some others, but isn't their a way to get a better bang for the buck! Also do you thnk its fair for a troop to retire, and contract back to the state in the same postion that they held before retirement, isn't that double dipping,a waste of taxpayers dollars. Sorry I know that you are running for sheriff and not on here for defending the State Police, again sorry, I'll get off my soapbox

The Allen boys not in police work at this time (twins) ? I know this has nothing to do with the election, it justs for my own enquiring mind.
