County Comission Meeting 9/16
St. Joseph County • Sep 17, 2008 8:04 AM
It was the first time this year that Barnes was asked to give an emergency services update. Earlier in the meeting, commissioners voted unanimously to relocate the emergency services office from the sheriffs department to the central dispatch building. Reasons for moving Barnes from the Sheriffs Department and housing it in the Central Dispatch building were discussed at an executive committee meeting Sept. 12. The executive meetings always precede a county commission meeting. It was an awkward situation because a new sheriff will be elected on Nov. 4. County Administrator Judy West-Wing said other details regarding the move, including how some of Barnes duties will be handled, will have to be ironed out after the election and during upcoming budget talks. Commissioners agreed that the maintenance support duties Barnes handled in the sheriffs department are vital. The sheriff-elect will be asked to submit a staffing plan for consideration following the Nov. 4 election. From the sturgis journal Looks like the county does what ever they want!!!!
Burr Oak Soldier! Lets Support him!
Sturgis Area • Aug 29, 2008 7:06 PM
This is posted on the river county journal so please lets get together at 2 pm and show our support! The City of Sturgis is asking citizens to ignore the presence of protesters who are expected to come to Sturgis on Saturday (August 30th) for the funeral of a Burr Oak soldier killed in Afghanistan. Via The Sturgis e-Wire, the city advises that between 12:15 p.m. and 1 p.m., a small group of protesters will be in Sturgis at the intersection of Nottawa and Lafayette protesting at Army Staff Sergeant Kristopher Rodgers funeral. Heres the text of the e-Wire advisory: Research on the group by Public Safety staff has found that they seem to be looking for acknowledgement and confrontation through exposure from the news media. This group attempts to disrupt communities such as Sturgis to further their cause. Many of their actions, protest signs, and words will appear derogatory and inflammatory. The Sturgis Police Department is asking citizens to avoid and/or ignore this group, to ensure that they do not meet their objective. If no one listens to their message, their mission has failed. Public Safety Director David Northrop is urging our community not to fall into this trap. If anyone would like to show support for the fallen soldiers family, we encourage you to do so in any of the following ways: Attend the funeral ervice at the Wesleyan Church from 1:00 p.m. until approximately 2:00 p.m., or Stand along the procession route at 2:00 p.m. (south on N. Nottawa Rd., then west on W. Chicago Rd, then south on S. Centerville Rd.) Attend the grave side service being held at the Lakeland High School in LaGrange, Indiana. Please remember that a soldier has been killed while performing his duty for our country and that his family is mourning his loss. Regardless of anyones stance on the war, our thoughts, prayers, and concern should be with the surviving members of the family and our fine men and women who are still serving our great nation. While this groups message may be offensive to many, the fact remains that it is their right as written in the Constitution to express their beliefs.
