Concerns: Parole practices and Truth in Sentencing

St. Joseph County • Jan 18, 2010 10:30 AM

As important as prisons are to ensure a safe society, the cost of operating Michigans correctional facilities is almost beyond sustainability. The correction system is meant to be a place of rehabilitation, but it has turned into a very expensive holding pen. The main objective of this bill is to prepare one-time criminals for a productive life in society. Please focus on the last statement in the above paragraph. Really, how many one-time criminals are we talking about? And how serious is the crime if they are in the pen for 15+ years? Then, keep in mind the "3 and you're out". How many murderers and repeat DUI with fatalities and child molesters are we housing and feeding? Those 3 crimes are something for which we shouldn't have to house and feed the criminal. Something isn't working. And that "something" is..criminals know they won't have dire consequences to face for the crimes they commit. Time to put the hammer down and bring back the death penalty. Solves two problems at once. *Preparing to be stoned* A wise man does not need advice and a fool won't take it.

How do you grade Obama so far and why?

Originally posted by amazon That man has taken on a major recession, a war, Iranian problems, global warming, a Swine flu scare, and health care in one year. I'm proud to hear him speak with level tone and intelligence. He acknowledges contradictions --which are a part of all our lives-- and does not hoist himself over to any extreme. I'd vote for him again in a blink and give him an A-. The minus is for his backing away from gay/lesbian issues. Guess we all have our *hot button* issues. Obviously "abortion" was an issue for the previous post writer. Agreed, with one minor exception. And I also agree with cuzimrite. I would give Obama an A and I, too, would vote for him again. I don't think anyone of us had a clue how bad off this country was. Fixing the problems won't happen overnight. But this man is going to give it his all...I really believe that. TR Police caution residents regarding larceny & BE

Ditto, Buck! And remember the old saying that you had to drag the body into the home, completely, if you shot him?? Not true. If he falls out the window, after being shot, he can lie in the snow and wait for the ambulance ride and/or the warm police car. [:D] A wise man does not need advice and a fool won't take it.

Lori: Smoking ban long overdue

These United States • Dec 16, 2009 6:20 PM

yeah, yeah, yeah. When is someone going to actually take the drunks off the road and KEEP THEM OFF?? Repeat offenders, unlicensed drivers, un-insured drivers....but we still have drunks killing people. One and you're done should be the rule. But no. Slap them on the wrist and give them a weapon. Yeah, let's get the smokers. A wise man does not need advice and a fool won't take it.
