St. Joseph County commissioners Tuesday decided to hold back on making a decision until after the new sheriffs administration can review pros and cons. Republican sheriff nominee Brad Balk appealed to the board of commissioners as they began to discuss the possibility. Balk is the Republican nominee for county sheriff. I only found out about this at 12:30 this afternoon, Balk said. At 4:30 I met with (present sheriff) Matt Lori and he agrees that this matter needs more discussion. Sheriff Lori could not be here. On Aug. 28, Capt. Jim Barnes attended the county commissions executive committee meeting to discuss the countys emergency services and homeland security programs. Barnes is the emergency services coordinator. He also handles duties for the sheriffs department. Balk said the sheriffs department would be losing a captain in the proposed move. Because the emergency services/homeland security programs are the responsibility of the board of commissioners, and since the Emergency Operations Center is located in the Central Dispatch building, it was suggested that the coordinators office should also be in the building. The Central Dispatch building is located across from the sheriffs department in Centreville. Meanwhile, in another unrelated move, it was announced by county administrator Judy West-Wing that Andy Goldberger, Central Dispatch director, will be interim human resources director. The position became vacant Aug. 29 when Charlie Cleaver resigned to accept a position near Flint. Goldberger will oversee Central Dispatch at the same time as the county seeks a new human resource director. Tuesday was not a good day for yes votes by county commissioners. A request by Allen Edwin Homes to offer special pricing to county employees died in a tie vote. The request had the endorsement of Three Rivers City Manager Joe Bippus. He had announced that Allen Edwin would soon begin building quality new homes within the city in Meadowbrook Farms, the former Welton property. Were hawking homes to county employees and I dont think thats a good idea, said commissioner Monte Bordner. Were taking sides with one builder over another in the county. Bippus had asked permission to provide information to county employees on the 4.8 percent discounts. The plan would would offer special pricing for eligible employees starting at $104,954 for a 1,600 square foot new home a $4,945 savings. A request by Diana Fair and Rose Risko of the St. Joseph County Veterans Affairs to attend Veterans Service Officers Training/Accreditation School Oct. 20-24 at Scott Air Force Base, Ill., squeaked past in a 4-3 vote. The cost will be $1,970. Bordner was the most vocal about the request saying, I dont think we will improve any services for our veterans by spending money for this training. Another no vote was resgistered when commissioners approved reappointments to the Solid Waste Management Planning Committee. Members approved for two-year terms ending in 2010 are Eric Shafer and Aaron Cullifer, representing industry; Krysti Boughton, environmental; Robert Robinson, general public; John Dobberteen and Carl Holsinger, municipalities. I remember a year or so ago they would do nothing to protect a dispatchers job when her daughter was dying of cancer. But wait till a 'drinking buddy' is on the wrong side of an election. This position has been at the Sheriffs department for 20 years.....Something stinks. Kudos to the commissions that put our citizens first and tabled this plan.
