County Treasurer resigns
St. Joseph County • Jan 15, 2012 10:44 PM
This issue just will NOT go away. A committee offers Barry Miller the job at a certain salary. The Comission/Judy West try to lower that salary after his announcement hit the local papers. Barry Miller says "no thanks" and runs screaming for the hills back to his previous employer. Then, this committe asks the 2nd in command to simply "take over the duties" for an undetermined amount of time. She says "No thank you" (sound familiar yet?) several times and then the committe sends out a press release saying that the 2nd in command WILL be taking over. Taking a page from their own book; she then contacts local media and says "No I will NOT!" I will resign/retire first. So...here we are 2 months after Phyllis Bainbridge announces her retirement and we are still without a decent appointee. I would think in this economy that our county would have folks crawling out of the woodwork to make $60K a year- even temporarily. No nights. No weekends. Holidays off. Nice, warm, comfy office working with Judy West and the County Comission...oh yeah, I can see the issue now. My prediction is that they will give Patty Bender or Judy West another $20,000 boost in their salaries and they will "oversee" this office until 12-31-12. A pathetic turn of events for an office that houses my tax dollars...and a LOT of them at that. The RUMOR RUNNER attempts to verify and chase down a variety of rumors in and around St. Joseph County.

My concern is STILL the issue at hand, which is what is being done so that Judy West does not attempt this low-ball offer again? What have we learned. If Patty Bender resigns her post as Clerk tomorrow...and we need to appoint someone to fill her term....what steps have our comissioners put into place to ASSURE county taxpayers that this situation will not happen again. Is there NOT a pay ladder/scale in place. Before I ran for Sheriff, Clerk, Drain Comissioner, Treasurer, Judge or any other elected position I would want to know the salary for someone with my credentials. I would never run for an office and then let my salary fate be decided, determined or "suggested" by Judy West to the County Comission. Do I think I should walk in making exactly what the out-going politician makes, not necessarily. That is why there is a scale. Education, experience...etc all play in. Every K-12 school system or facility with a union has this...it's not rocket science. So, not to harp on my question again...but how do we ensure that the people who are accountable...are held accountable and that this does not happen again. Ever. Period. Buck poses a great question. What DID go wrong and how do we avoid the situation in the future. Some might think that the county administrator was simply trying to save the county $3,000. Others see something far more sinister. Waiting for the press release and resignation from Barry Miller's current employer to hit the official channels and then changing the offer assuming he was "in too deep" to back out. Is this a case of the county comissioners coming in at the 11th hour and messing things up or was Judy West Wing attempting to pull a snow-job on the comissioners by asking her County Treasurer to "not say anything to anyone...even your husband"? Hmmm. What DID go wrong and how do we ensure it does not happen in the future? If we cannot figure THAT out we are going to have crummy applicants from now on. Apparantly, the county does NOT run like most businesses. The way that St. Joseph County has treated Barry Miller is atrocious. What a sad day in our county. The RUMOR RUNNER attempts to verify and chase down a variety of rumors in and around St. Joseph County.

I apologize for my vocabulary in my earlier post. I would agree with you that the wording of the "press release" was unfortunate. They really should have had their ducks in a row before sending anything to the media. 1) That she is resigning. 2) Why she is resigning. 3) Is there anyone in-house that is interested. 4) Information for individuals interested in applying (salary, hours, responsabilities, training, dates for resumes) I see they have been adding to the original information- but I guess I would like to know my salary before I would jump in. $25,000 a year or $75,000 a year. How do they determine or set that salary!?!?! The RUMOR RUNNER attempts to verify and chase down a variety of rumors in and around St. Joseph County.
